We have certainly come a long way from the age when women gasped for air in their excruciating corsets. Fashion insiders seem undecided about what to make of the athleisure trend — that in vogue trend in which athletic gear has become everyday wear, in which we can blissfully wear yoga pants to the office!.
Is it fashionable to laze around in gym clothes? Is the trend just another passing fad? Is this Fast Company employee a “freakozoid” for thinking she could get away with wearing yoga pants to the office?
We certainly love polished style and purpose a little too much to consider lazing around in yoga pants a frequent option. But, we welcome the merging of comfort and style, the intersection of comfort and refinement. What’s the use for power dressing if you look powerful in it but can’t change the world in it — and changing the world might very well take long hours and work days.
The secret to stylishly getting behind the athleisure trend is balance. And we have some tips on how:
1. Opt for dressy athleisure.
Choose great fabrics in stylish cuts.
Comfortable isn’t necessarily sloppy. Comfort is in performance fabrics that breath, wick moisture and resist odor, and such fabrics can be designed to look refined and stylish.
See here for examples of yoga pants you can wear to most places!
2. Add structure.
Add structure to the loose lines of workout wear with structured denim or leather jackets and stylish cape coats, and you’re well on your wear to pulling off workout wear in non-workout spaces.
3. Accessorize to the occasion.
Dress up your athletic wear to leisure level with the right accessories.
We are thinking sexy hoop earrings and long chains for most casual settings, booties in pointed or block heels for nights out, unique crossbody bags for foodie festivals, concerts, and brunch with the girls.
For days at the office, a button-down shirt and a pair of pumps will do the trick! Obviously that does sound antithetical to the idea of comfort, but believe us, some heel lovers don’t think so!
4. Make wise palette choices.
We’ll stick to classy colors here — no neon anything, just neutral and jewel tones.
Think midnight blues, taupes, charcoals and onyx blacks.
